The route

The Brenner is the classic crossing — Munich or Innsbruck over the pass at Brennero, down the Adige to Bolzano and Trento — but this route leaves the express corridor exactly where everyone else stays on it. From Trento it climbs into the Valle dei Mòcheni, then follows the old plain southward: Verona’s quiet left bank, Modena’s slow food, Arezzo’s un-Florentine Tuscany, and Orvieto on its cliff as the gate to Lazio.

Seven days at a workable pace. Every Italian leg runs on regional trains; the pass logic of Italia in Tour applies south of Bolzano. The route is built to be joined midway — from Munich, Innsbruck or Vienna you are in Trento by early afternoon.

From Trento, the Valsugana line and the valley bus: one night among the Bersntoler, the German language island above the Fersina.

Two nights on the left bank: Veronetta, San Zeno, Castel San Pietro at golden hour — and the Arena as architecture, not as a queue.

Regional to Arezzo: Piero della Francesca, the antiques market if the first weekend aligns, and Tuscany without the Florence crush.

End on the cliff. From Orvieto Scalo the funicular climbs to the Duomo; Rome is an hour away when the route lets you go.
